  24. launches an earnest, poignant cycle of five black history

  28.     EASTERN STANDARD. Insider trading, bag ladies, AIDS and
  29. nouvelle cuisine -- everything '80s gets skewered, then
  30. sentimentalized, in this stylish satire transferred to Broadway.

  32.     FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE. Kathy Bates
  33. returns to the role she winsomely originated in Terrence
  34. McNally's off Broadway hit about love between two lonely losers.

  36.     PLATONOV. Romanian director Liviu Ciulei blends farce and
  37. great sadness in Chekhov's early drama, at Harvard's American
  38. Repertory Theater.

  42.     THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET: FOR ELLINGTON (East-West). Part
  43. homage, part re-invention, this is a ravishing tribute by one
  44. of the premier jazz groups to one of America's greatest
  45. composers. The MJQ pay the Duke the ultimate honor: they don't
  46. just respect him, they make him swing.

  48.     HANDEL: MESSIAH  (Archiv). O thou that tellest good
  49. tidings: Handel's hardy perennial gets a definitive performance
  50. from Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert & Choir. Hallelujah!

  52.     SCHUBERT: SYMPHONY NO. 9 (Virgin). Charles Mackerras leads
  53. the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the aptly
  54. nicknamed "Great" C Major Symphony, on original instruments.

  56.     THE TRAVELING WILBURYS, VOL. 1 (Wilbury Records). They look
  57. and sound a lot like George Harrison, Bob Dylan and other
  58. famous folk. Could it possibly be? The mystery is thin, but the
  59. sounds are joyous, making this the good-time record of the year.
